The United Kingdom, or the UK, is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Though each country has its own culture, customs and traditions, they are all united under one flag: the Union Jack. The five most popular sports in England are football (soccer), cricket, rugby union and basketball; however, other sports such as American football, netball and field hockey are gaining popularity amongst the younger generations in England too.
1) Football
Football is the most popular sport in England and the most widely played sport globally. The Football Association (FA) was established on 26 October 1863, making it the oldest association of its kind. There are a number of different types of football, with 11-a-side being the most popular. It is also known as ‘association football’. In 1872, the first ever international match was played between Scotland and England; this led to the foundation of FIFA and UEFA.
There are national leagues for men’s teams who represent their country at international level like EPL (English Premier League), La Liga (Spanish League), Bundesliga (German League). These leagues have been developed by many clubs over time to find top talent. The EPL has 20 clubs while La Liga has 20 clubs too. There are many clubs that compete at national level such as Manchester United FC, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF who have won international competitions like Champions League and La Liga respectively.
2) Cricket
Cricket is the most popular sport in England. It’s a bat-and-ball game and was developed by children who were bored during the long English winters. Cricket is played between two teams of 11 players (the batting side, or innings) and one player on each team is the bowler, who delivers the ball to the other team’s batsman. The batsman then defends his wicket with a cricket bat.
3) Rugby
Rugby is the national sport of England, and has a long history dating back to 1823. It is played by men and women, both at amateur and professional levels. Rugby union had been one time the most popular sport in the world, but has now been overtaken by association football. The Rugby World Cup is played every four years, with New Zealand winning the most titles.
4) Tennis
Tennis is one of the most popular sports in England. It has been a part of the Wimbledon Championships, an annual tennis event held at the All-England Club, since 1877. Wimbledon is considered to be the most prestigious tennis tournament. The world’s best male and female players compete on grass courts for this honor.
In other words, tennis is where it all happens!
5) Boxing
Boxing is a sport originating from ancient Greece and Rome. The modern game of boxing originated from these roots and has evolved over time to become one of the most popular sports in England. Boxing is a combat sport where two people fight each other using their fists. The goal is usually to strike your opponent on the head or torso with enough power to knock them down, until they are unable to continue fighting back.
