Have You Seen a Brooklyn Hygienist Lately?

The objective of scaling and root planing is to mechanically remove harmful factors that can lead to inflammation of the gum and surrounding bone. Common harmful factors removed by this effective periodontal treatment include plaque and tartar. Doctors Network has made easy the process of searching for a periodontist or dentist near you that accepts your insurance.
These non-surgical procedures which completely cleanse the gum pockets, work effectively for individuals suffering from gingivitis and/or even severe periodontitis.Reasons for needing scaling/root planing

Deep cleaning can be used both as a preventative procedure as well as a stand-alone treatment. These procedures are performed as a preventative measure for a periodontitis sufferer.
Here are some reasons why deep cleanings may be helpful:

  • Aesthetic effects
Scaling and root planing helps remove tartar and plaque from tooth roots and under the gumline. Additionally, if stains are on the teeth, they will be cleaned when getting the scaling and root planing procedure.
  • Tooth protection
When gingival pockets exceed 3mm in depth, there is an increased risk of periodontitis. As pockets become deeper, they house more colonies of dangerous bacteria. Ultimately, an inflammatory response by blood cells begins to damage gingival and bone tissue which may cause tooth loss. Periodontal disease is the main cause of edentulism in the world.
  • Disease prevention
The oral bacteria that cause periodontal disease can travel through the blood to other parts of the body. Research shows that heart disease and lung infections have been linked to harmful periodontal bacteria. Deep cleaning removes bacteria and prevents periodontal disease, thus preventing the infectious bacteria from traveling to other organs of the body.
  • Better breath
One of the most detectable symptoms of periodontitis is halitosis. Food particles and bacteria can cause a bad odor in the mouth which is alleviated with procedures such as deep cleaning.

What does deep cleaning involve?

Deep cleaning or Scaling and root planing treatments are performed after a comprehensive examination of the gums and teeth. Your dentist, will take dental X-rays, conduct visual exams, and make an accurate diagnosis before recommending or performing the scaling and root planing procedures.
Depending on the condition of the gums, the extent of tartar and plaque present, the depth of the pockets, and the progression of the periodontitis, local or topical anesthetic may be used.

This treatment is performed with special dental instruments and can include an ultrasonic cleaning tool. The scaling device removes tartar and plaque from the enamel surfaces and root surfaces. In many cases, the scaling device includes an irrigation process that can be used to administer an antibacterial agent below the gums that can help reduce oral bacteria.

Root Planing

This part of the procedure is the treatment that serves to remove the cementum and surface dentin that is embedded with unwanted bacteria, calculus, and toxins. The root surface of the tooth is literally smoothed to promote good healing. Having clean, smooth root surfaces prevents microorganisms from easily colonizing in the future.
Right after the deep cleaning procedures, the gum pockets may be treated with antimicrobial agents. This will reduce irritation and help the gums to heal quickly.
On the next follow-up appointment, the Brooklyn dentist or hygienist will thoroughly examine the gingival tissues again to see how well they have healed. If the pockets still measure more than 3mm in depth, more aggressive treatments may be recommended.
